Dollar Book Store
Gregory Heights Dollar Book Store...a short history...
The Gregory Heights Dollar Book Store was started in the 2010-11 school year with an idea and a grant application. The idea was what if students could begin to create a home library, bought from a convenient, cheap source right at school? The grant source was the Highline Schools Foundation Excel Grant. With that small award our program was launched.
We began accepting book donations and purchasing used children's books while arranging for our first sale in April 2011. We sold books to our students for one dollar each and gave away many books with "gift certificates." All proceeds from the sale went right back into book purchases for our next sale.
Since that time, we have held many DBS sales, averaging four or five per year. In school year 2013-14, we estimate we were able to get over 4000 books into our student's hands and the year 2014-15, we held four sales resulting in 4500 books for our students to take home, read and keep. In school year 2015-16 we placed over 5000 books into our student's hands. In the 2016-17 school year, with the help and organization of Tiana Manola, Theresa Kim, Jennifer Cofer and Pam Roth, we once again saw over 5000 books get into our student's hands and homes.
